Auditions
Audition Process for Plays
Typically, Ms. Castro will hold an informational meeting to offer information about the schedule and play. If there is time and interest, she will offer an audition workshop where students will receive peer and teacher coaching on their audition monologues. Soon after the workshop, there will be an open audition for all students interested in being a part of the production. Students will perform a 1 minute monologue. Memorization is encouraged but not required. Finally, there will be call backs for principal parts. During callbacks, students will read sides (short scenes) from the play. Memorization is not required or expected. If you were not called back, it does not mean that you aren't in the show. The cast list is typically posted the following morning. For the spring musical, you will perform a song from a musical for the open audition. There will also be a dance audition where you will learn and perform a short piece of choreography. There will be separate vocal and acting callbacks.
What is the director looking for in an audition?
An audition is like a job interview. Above all, you will want to present yourself as a collaborative and responsible artist. All directors will assess an actor's voice, physicality, and stage presence. Ms. Castro is especially interested in an actor's ability to take direction, ability to listen and react, and ability to bring something vital and honest to the character.
